What to watch on Day 1 at the Winter Olympics: Ilia Malinin, Jessie Diggins and the first medals

The first full day of the Games, Saturday brings medal events in Alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, speed skating and ski jumping, as well as more U.S. and Canada women’s hockey action.

Let’s take a look at everything to watch today in Italy.


Top events to watch

Alpine skiing: First medals of the Games

Time: 5:30 a.m. ET, 11:30 a.m. in Italy

What to watch for: The men’s downhill will produce our first medalists of these Olympics. Swiss star Marco Odermatt has won the last two World Cup downhill titles and the last four overall titles. He’ll try for his first Olympic downhill gold with a pair of countrymen — Franjo von Allmen and Alexis Monney — among his top competitors. Ryan Cochran-Siegle, the silver medalist in the super-G in Beijing in 2022, is the top American hope.

Figure skating: Ilia Malinin takes the stage

Time: 1:45 p.m. ET, 7:45 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: The team event continues with the men’s short program, which will feature American superstar Ilia Malinin, and the ice dance’s free dance. It’ll be Malinin’s first skate of these Olympics; he’ll be back Sunday for the free skate on the final day of the team competition.

Cross-country skiing: Jessie Diggins starts her final Olympics

Time: 7 a.m. ET, 1 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: American Jessie Diggins’ first shot at a medal comes in the women’s skiathlon, a mix of 10 kilometers each of the classic and skate techniques. Diggins finished sixth in the event in Beijing, where it was run over 7.5 km of each technique. The owner of three of the four Olympic cross-country medals in U.S. history, she is retiring after this winter season.

Ice hockey: U.S., Canada back at it

Time: U.S. at 10:40 a.m. ET, 4:40 p.m. in Italy; Canada at 3:10 p.m. ET, 9:10 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: The Americans take on Finland and Canada battles Switzerland in the second group-stage games for each. Earlier in the day, Germany faces Japan (6:10 a.m. ET) and Sweden plays Italy (8:40 a.m. ET).

Other events

Curling: Mixed doubles round robin

Times: 4:05 a.m., 8:35 a.m. and 1:05 p.m. ET; 10:05 a.m., 2:35 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: Canada plays in the morning and evening sessions in Italy. The Americans have games in each of the last two windows, including against Great Britain at 8:35 a.m.

Freestyle skiing: Women’s and men’s slopestyle qualification

Times: Women at 4:30 a.m. ET, 10:30 a.m. in Italy; men at 8 a.m. ET, 2 p.m. in Italy

What to watch for: It’s our first look at Eileen Gu, the Chinese freestyle star, who won two gold medals in Beijing in 2022 and also took silver in slopestyle. Americans Alex Hall and Nick Goepper — the defending gold and silver medalists, respectively — are in the men’s competition.

Speed skating: Women’s 3,000-meter final

Time: 10 a.m. ET, 4 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: The Netherlands’ Irene Schouten won this event in 2022 but has since retired. Fellow Dutch skater Joy Beune won twice at the distance on the World Cup circuit this year and is the defending world champion.

Luge: Men’s singles, runs 1 and 2

Time: 11 a.m. ET, 5 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: Germany has won men’s singles gold in three of the last four Olympics, most recently with Johannes Ludwig in 2022. With Ludwig now retired, Austria’s Jonas Müller and Germany’s Max Langenhan and Felix Loch are among the favorites. Runs 3 and 4 are Sunday. Only the top 20 lugers after the first three rounds contest the fourth, after which medals are awarded to the top three total times.

Ski jumping: Women’s normal hill individual final

Time: 12:45 p.m. ET, 6:45 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: Japan’s Nozomi Maruyama and Slovenia’s Nika Prevc have been the clear top two jumpers all year. They’ll be favorites in this and the large hill competition next week.

Snowboarding: Men’s big air final

Time: 1:30 p.m. ET, 7:30 p.m. in Italy
TV: Peacock

What to watch for: China’s Su Yiming won gold at his home Olympics in 2022, just before his 18th birthday.
