Timothée Chalamet is remembering a moment that quickly became tense on the Marty Supreme set.
The Golden Globe-winning actor revealed at a recent Q&A with Robert Downey Jr. at New York’s DGA Theater that he was threatened by an unnamed extra while shooting a scene for the Josh Safdie-directed ping-pong film.
“I won’t say who, but in that motel sequence, there are a lot of non-actors…that I find it really thrilling to work with, but sometimes it would take multiple takes to really get something out of them,” Chalamet explained, per PEOPLE. “And I’m really getting in the guy’s face and I’m really trying to get him angry with me.”

Despite his best efforts, the Dune star’s attempts just couldn’t get the guy to crack. “I was saying to Josh, ‘He’s not getting angry with me, he’s not getting angry with me,’” Chalamet said.
However, the 30-year-old quickly found out that all his poking and prodding was actually working a little too well against his companion in the scene.
“I did another take, and then the guy said, ‘I was just in jail for 30 years. You really don’t want to f— with me. You don’t want to see me angry,'” Chalamet said, breaking into nervous laughter. “I said to Josh, ‘Holy s—, who do you have me opposite, man?’”
Marty Supreme tells the story of Marty Mauser (Chalamet), a young man who dedicates himself to becoming the best ping-pong player in the world. The film also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, and more.
