Plunging sentiment among American consumers doesn’t necessarily spell disaster for the U.S. economy.

The

University of Michigan reported last week that its consumer-sentiment index has fallen to 50.3, which is, aside from one month in 2022, the lowest since this monthly survey began in 1979. (That reading in 2022 was only barely lower, at 50.0.)
