Theri Re-Release Date: Theri, starring Vijay in the lead role, is scheduled to re-release in cinemas on February 27, 2026. The announcement was made by producer Kalaipuli S. Thanu on Tuesday evening through his official X (formerly Twitter) account.
In his post shared at 7:19 PM on February 17, Thanu wrote, “IPS Vijaykumar on Duty from 27th Feb,” confirming the new release date. The film’s return to theatres had earlier faced two postponements in January.
Directed by Atlee and produced under the V Creations banner, Theri was originally released in April 2016. The action thriller featured Vijay as a former police officer who goes into hiding to safeguard his young daughter from adversaries linked to his past. The cast also included Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Amy Jackson and child actor Nainika in key roles. Music for the film was composed by G. V. Prakash Kumar, with cinematography by George C. Williams and editing by Ruben.
Re-Release Postponed Twice Before Final Date
The re-release was initially planned for January 15, 2026, but was deferred following requests from producers of Pongal releases. On January 13, Thanu stated that the decision was taken in response to appeals from teams of other films scheduled for the festive window.
Subsequently, the film was slated to hit screens on January 23. However, that date too was revised. Director Mohan G Kshatriyan had publicly requested support for his film Draupathi 2, seeking a postponement of Theri to ensure adequate screen availability. In response, Thanu reshared the appeal and reiterated V Creations’ commitment to supporting emerging filmmakers and producers, adding that a new date would be announced shortly.
A special re-release trailer for Theri was unveiled on January 18 ahead of the planned January release. With the February 27 date now confirmed, the film is expected to return to theatres nearly a decade after its original run.
Theri marked Atlee’s second directorial venture after Raja Rani (2013) and went on to become one of the notable commercial outings in Vijay’s career. The upcoming re-release will offer audiences another opportunity to watch the action drama on the big screen.
