‘The Night Agent’ star Gabriel Basso reacts to Rose’s absence in season 3

This article contains spoilers for The Night Agent season 3.

Rose Larkin might be gone from The Night Agent season 3, but she’s far from forgotten.

Luciane Buchanan starred in seasons 1 and 2 as Rose, a tech wiz who is first rescued by titular night agent Peter Sutherland (Gabriel Basso), and quickly turns into his partner. In a heartbreaking end to season 2, Peter forces Rose to promise to stay away from him for her own safety.

Basso tells Entertainment Weekly that Peter will never be over Rose, no matter where she is or how long they’ve been out of contact. “I remember they asked me very early, before they opened the writer’s room for season 3: ‘Would Peter ever have a relationship with someone else?’” Basso says. “I was like, ‘No, no. I think it would undermine his commitment to Rose.’”

While another woman, journalist Isabel De Leon (Genesis Rodriguez), is introduced in season 3, her relationship with Peter remains purely platonic (and focused on taking down intelligence broker Jacob Monroe).

“[Peter and Rose] only really separated due to circumstance, not because they didn’t love one another,” Basso continues. “So I think he still has that love for her. He still very much values her and thinks about her, cares about her. So even when she’s not on screen… she’s important to the show and important to Peter.”

Basso doesn’t think it’s far-fetched to hope to see Rose in potential future seasons of Netflix’s action-thriller, pointing out that Fola Evans-Akingbola’s secret service agent Chelsea Arrington was (mostly) absent from season 2 but made a comeback this season.

“Yeah, for sure,” he says when asked if we could ever see Rose return in Peter’s future. “I think just like Chelsea, you know, was in [season 1] and came back in 3. The people in Peter’s life are very important to him. And I think if there was a time where he had the possibility to value his personal life, I think… she’d be the first person he would reach out to.”

It certainly seems like Peter might have some extra time on his hands going forward — in the closing moments of season 3, Peter tells FBI Deputy Director Aiden Mosley (Albert Jones) that he’d like a break from Night Action to find some “balance” in his life.

“It could go in all sorts of different directions,” Basso says of the show’s future. “Season 4 is sort of, anything is possible, as opposed to like a constant continuation…. If we get [season 4], I’m looking forward to seeing what happens with it.”

The Night Agent season 3 is streaming now on Netflix.
