The “Field of Light,” an icon of world art in Uluru, celebrates its tenth anniversary | News

One of the world’s most recognizable large-scale light installations, Bruce Munro’s Field of Light , marks its tenth anniversary in 2026, celebrated with events and collaborations across Australia.

Inaugurated in 2016 as a temporary installation, the Field of Light has since welcomed over 750,000 visitors and become Munro ‘s most permanent artwork . Located in the desert near Uluru, it consists of 50,000 solar-powered stems inspired by native wildflowers after the rain and covers an area equivalent to seven football fields. The installation is delicately placed on Aṉangu land, a site of cultural significance dating back tens of thousands of years.

Its influence now extends worldwide: Field of Light at Uluru inspired Munro’s installations at Sensorio in California, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, Freedom Plaza in Manhattan, and Salcombe in the UK. Yet Uluru remains the most original and enduring expression of this concept, drawing audiences from around the globe to the spiritual heart of Australia.

Ayers Rock Resort will mark this anniversary with a program of events, including a new mural in Melbourne on Wurundjeri Country, created jointly by Aṉangu artist Valerie Brumby and Wurundjeri muralist Alex Kerr; VIP evenings with Bruce Munro at the Field of Light ; free Q&A sessions at the resort; and revamped menus for dining experiences at the Field of Light , featuring Indigenous and Native ingredients sourced from Cooee Native Ingredients Australia, a First Nations-owned company.

Matt Cameron-Smith, CEO of Indigenous Tourism Australia, operator of Ayers Rock Resort, said: “The installation was planned for one year; it has now been open for ten years. Field of Light is now one of Australia’s most beloved and photographed experiences. We are incredibly proud to see this installation celebrate its tenth anniversary shining brighter than ever. This anniversary is an opportunity to celebrate the artwork, landscape, and cultural heritage that make this place so special.”

Bruce Munro added: “ Field of Light was born from a personal reaction to the beauty and energy of the Uluṟu desert. I never imagined it would lead to a worldwide series of installations. The idea was born at the foot of Uluṟu, which will always be the spiritual home of the artwork. Creating the installation was the realization of a dream, and it is a personal joy to see it still shining in the landscape that inspired it.”

Aṉangu artist Valerie Brumby stated: “Creating this artwork, painting the sunset over the Field of Light, makes me happy and proud. It’s good for visitors, and we’re doing a mural to show everyone how beautiful it is.”

The anniversary year also highlights the growing collection of immersive experiences offered by Ayers Rock Resort: Wintjiri Wiṟu , a drone and light experience created in partnership with Aṉangu that shares a chapter of an ancient creation story, and Sunrise Journeys , a female-led laser and light experience co-created by three female artists from Aṉangu.
