Tamil Nadu, the southernmost state of India known for its ancient temples, rich history, literature, architecture, and vibrant cultural heritage, captivated audiences at World Travel Market (WTM) London 2025. The state’s participation highlighted its deep connection with London — a relationship built on centuries of trade, education, and cultural exchange — and invited travellers to discover its timeless charm.
Leading the Tamil Nadu delegation were Dr. K. Manivasan, I.A.S., Additional Chief Secretary to the Government for Tourism, Culture, and Religious Endowments, and Mr. T. Christuraj, I.A.S., Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism and Managing Director of Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC). They were joined by leading tour operators, destination management companies, and hoteliers, fostering productive B2B discussions with key global stakeholders.
For the first time, the Tamil Nadu Wilderness Corporation co-exhibited alongside Tamil Nadu Tourism, showcasing the state’s eco-tourism and adventure offerings under the “Trek Tamil Nadu” initiative. The state’s pavilion served as a hub for promoting partnerships, investments, and collaboration in heritage, eco, and adventure tourism.
Dr. Manivasan emphasized Tamil Nadu’s appeal to global travellers seeking cultural depth and sustainability, while Mr. Christuraj announced an upcoming exclusive Roadshow in Paris on November 7, 2025, following the state’s participation at IFTM Top Resa in September. The roadshow aims to strengthen ties with the French market and boost inbound travel.
A Land of Timeless Stories and Living Heritage
Tamil Nadu’s identity is shaped by its Sangam-era literary legacy, dating between 200 BCE and 300 CE, which celebrates five ecological landscapes — Kurinji (mountainous), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid) — each with distinct biodiversity and cultural significance. From trekking in the Kurinji hills to serene coastal retreats in Neithal, the state offers a journey through both geography and time.
Home to seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Tamil Nadu is famed for festivals such as the Indian Dance Festival, the Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival, and the Tamil Nadu International Kite Festival. Its grand harvest celebration, Pongal, featuring the traditional sport of Jallikattu, is a symbol of living tradition — reflected in the new 16-acre Jallikattu arena in Madurai, blending cultural preservation with modern infrastructure.
Adventure and wellness are key focuses for 2025, with water sports across the state’s 1,076-kilometre coastline, and expanded offerings in rural, medical, and eco-tourism. Lesser-known destinations like Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, and Yercaud are being developed to complement popular hill stations.

Where Culture Meets Nature
Tamil Nadu’s natural wealth — including the Nilgiris, Agasthiyarmalai, and Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserves — positions it as a paradise for eco-tourists. From trekking and safaris to water adventures, the state’s biodiversity is unmatched. Coastal tourism thrives at Kanniyakumari, where the 133-foot Thiruvalluvar Statue and India’s only sea glass bridge light up nightly with a laser and sound show, offering panoramic sunrise and sunset views.
Culturally, the state delights visitors with classical dances, folk arts, crafts, and cuisine. With 69 Geographical Indication (GI) tags, Tamil Nadu’s artisans preserve traditional crafts — from Kanchipuram silk sarees to Tanjore paintings. Visitors can also experience authentic Tamil life through community-run homestays amid tea and spice plantations, enriching both local livelihoods and traveller experiences.
A Living Legacy
Tamil Nadu remains a destination where every temple, mountain, and monument tells a story. From sacred pilgrimages to wild landscapes, from UNESCO heritage sites to thriving urban centers, its legacy continues to captivate and inspire travellers from around the world.
