Gangster thriller “Mallorca Confidential,” marking a move towards the mainstream from producer Valérie Delpierre (“20,000 Species of Bees”), will be brought to market at Berlin by Barcelona-based studio Filmax.
Starring Lolita Flores (“Las Invisibles”), “Mallorca Confidential” turns on La Chusa, the self-made matriarch of a clan who controls the drug trade on Mallorca. Set in the early 2000s, the story takes place at the height of Spain’s real estate boom with a housing project threatening to wipe La Chusa’s home from the map. When La Chusa’s nephew dies while working for her as a drug mule, her niece also vows revenge.
Directed by David Ilundain (“B”), “Mallorca Confidential” is written by Amelia Mora, who co-wrote 2024’s “Undercover, which grossed €9.7 million ($11.4 million) in Spain and is another quality thriller with a strong female lead.
“Far from a nocturnal noir style, the film embraces its own identity: a coastal thriller where violence, crime and illegal money coexist in broad daylight with the island’s luminous landscapes,” Filmax noted.
“Amelia Mora’s script invites the audience to place themselves in the shoes of each character and discover the contradictions and gray areas that influence their decisions,” producer Delpierre added.
