‘Schitt’s Creek’ stars final reunion before Catherine O’Hara’s death was 2024 Emmys

Everyone knows that Moira Rose’s (Catherine O’Hara) favorite season is “awards,” so it’s only fitting that the final Schitt’s Creek reunion happened during the 2024 Emmys.

O’Hara died Friday at 71 following a brief illness, making her appearance during the 2024 awards show with the rest of the Rose family — Dan Levy, Eugene Levy, and Annie Murphy — the last time all four stars were together.

And thankfully, it wasn’t just a brief photo opportunity caught on a red carpet, or a quick conversation in the audience during a commercial break. The four actors reunited onstage to close out the Emmys with a hilariously charming bit inspired by their cult-favorite comedy series that, appropriately, gave O’Hara her flowers.

The segment began with a surprise appearance by Murphy, who played well-meaning but oblivious former socialite daughter Alexis on the comedy, as she joined awards show co-hosts Dan and Eugene, who played her brother (ew!) David and father Johnny, respectively, to present the final award of the night.

But in true Rose family fashion, there was some miscommunication on who exactly was being honored.

“Oh my gosh, it’s my TV sister, Annie Murphy,” Dan said. “What’s up, Annie?”

“Well, they said the shining star of Schitt’s Creek was going to present the final award of the night, so… ” Murphy said, fully channeling Alexis’ endearing narcissism as she told her former costars to “scooch back a little bit” on the stage.

That’s when Eugene cut in with his trademark kind, paternal discipline to state the obvious: “There’s been a little confusion here.”

“So Annie,” Dan added, “we’re actually here to present that person, which isn’t — ”

“Which isn’t me,” Murphy agreed with pretend embarrassment, before she then introduced “our favorite TV” mom, O’Hara, in unison with Dan.

O’Hara then gracefully joined her TV family on the stage to present the win for Hacks, as she also reprised a version of her character Moira — iconic affectation in her voice and all — when she questioned why they had to choose just one winner.

“All the nominees have done such wonderful, hilarious work,” she said, stalling the reveal by ripping up the card with the winner (only to later whip out an extra copy). “Must we? Yes, apparently we must.”

The Schitt’s Creek reunion at the Emmys was so beloved that it had fans once again calling out for a true reunion (either as another season or a movie). And as recently as July 2025, Dan addressed the potential for the Roses to get back together onscreen.

“I, too, just found out that the Rosebud Motel sign was just put back up,” Dan said on Watch What Happens Live in response to a fan asking about the return of the real set they used during filming. “I would love to say yes, [that it signals a reunion is happening,] but I have no idea what it’s doing there. It was just as much a surprise to me as it was to you. So I don’t know. My hope is that maybe sometime, somewhere.”

Levy added that he thinks about a potential reunion “all the time.”

“I have a kernel of an idea,” he revealed at the time. “I love the show so much, and I don’t want to disappoint the show, and I don’t want to disappoint the fans. And I know it’s easy to just take a check and put something out there, but I care about it too much. And I’m just waiting for that idea to be the right one, and then maybe, yeah.”

Co-created by Dan and Eugene, Schitt’s Creek followed the uber-wealthy Rose family, led by video store magnate Johnny and his soap opera star wife Moira, who lose their vast fortune overnight. As the couple and their spoiled kids David and Alexis are forced to relocate to a small-town, rundown motel — their only remaining asset — they rebuild their lives and ultimately learn to love each other in ways they never had before.

The Emmy-winning sitcom ran for six seasons between 2015 and 2020, after premiering on Canadian network CBC before becoming a runaway hit on Netflix. The final season swept the 2020 Emmys with nine comedy wins, including for the four main stars.

Dan Levy posted a sweet tribute to O’Hara on Instagram on Friday. “What a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O’Hara’s brilliance for all those years,” he wrote. “Having spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It’s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.”

He also shared his condolences with O’Hara’s husband, production designer Bo Welch, and their two sons. “My heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke and every member of her big, beautiful family.”
