Salim Khan, a major name in Hindi cinema during the 1970s and 1980s, turned 90 on 24 November last year. The birthday coincided with the death of Dharmendra, who starred in several films written by Salim Khan, including “Sholay”, “Seeta aur Geeta” and “Yaadon Ki Baraat”, marking an emotional day for the film community.

Born into an affluent family in Indore, Salim Khan came to Mumbai in early adulthood hoping to become a film actor. Salim Khan took on small roles for nearly ten years but did not achieve the stardom first imagined. Salim Khan then shifted to work behind the camera, assisting writer-director Abrar Alvi.

During this phase, Salim Khan met Javed Akhtar and the two began a writing partnership that reshaped Hindi film storytelling in the 1970s. They wrote around twenty-four films together, with many becoming major box office successes. Their scripts blended crime, drama and family themes that appealed to large audiences.

Beyond “Sholay”, “Deewar” and “Don”, Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar wrote several other popular titles. Their filmography includes “Trishul”, “Zanjeer”, “Seeta Aur Geeta”, “Haathi Mere Saathi”, “Yaadon Ki Baarat” and “Mr India”. As doctors watch Salim Khan’s progress in the ICU, many in the industry recall this long list of influential works.
