Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari owners to acquire Belgium second-tier club

Paris Saint-Germain’s majority owner Qatar Sports Investments (QSI) is set to complete a takeover of Belgian second-tier side KAS Eupen.

The takeover remains subject to regulatory approvals but once confirmed will see QSI complete a full acquisition of the Belgian Challenger League side and take full operational control of the club.

QSI confirmed in a press release on Tuesday it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for a full acquisition of Eupen, adding it would take control of “all associated sporting, commercial, and operational assets”.

Eupen had been owned by Qatar’s Aspire Zone Foundation, a state-funded entity aimed at developing sporting talent and enhancing Qatar’s sporting pedigree, since June 2012.

The takeover sees QSI expand its portfolio of clubs, having owned PSG since 2011 before acquiring a minority stake in Portuguese side Sporting Braga in October 2022.

PSG have become one of the world’s top sporting and commercial teams under QSI’s ownership, winning 11 Ligue 1 titles and the Champions League for the first time in 2025.

QSI described Belgium as a “highly attractive football market” with Eupen “offering significant potential for long-term sustainable growth”.

A QSI statement added: “QSI and the club’s executives will focus on strengthening KAS Eupen’s sporting model, expanding its commercial capabilities, and identifying growth opportunities. Key priorities will include youth academy development, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced community engagement.”

Eupen were founded in 1945 and have predominantly played in the Belgian second and third tier. They were part of the Belgian Pro League between 2014 and 2024, with former France and Chelsea midfielder Claude Makelele the team’s head coach between 2017 and 2019.

Eupen are seventh in the Belgian Challenger League 15 games into the 2025-26 season, 16 points off top spot.

During Aspire’s ownership, the club was considered the “next stage” for graduates of the Aspire Academy in the transition from junior to senior football.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi, QSI chaiman, said: “Qatar Sports Investments is proud to become the custodian of KAS Eupen and contribute to the development of football in Belgium. With QSI’s global expertise and passion for football, our objective is to build a modern, competitive football and business structure – bringing pride to KAS Eupen supporters and building on the club’s great legacy to date.”
