Making their third addition in 24 hours, the San Diego Padres agreed to a one-year contract with free-agent right-hander Germán Márquez on Saturday, a league source confirmed to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.
Financial terms of the deal, which includes a mutual option for 2027, were not immediately disclosed. The option allows the Padres, working with a tight budget, to defer a portion of Márquez’s likely modest guarantee to a buyout of that option.
The Padres earlier agreed to deals with veteran outfielder Nick Castellanos and right-hander Griffin Canning over the last day.
Márquez, who turns 31 this month, will join Canning as another back-end option for the Padres’ starting rotation. Formerly an All-Star and staff stalwart with the Colorado Rockies, Márquez recorded a career-worst 6.70 ERA in 26 starts last season as he made his way back from Tommy John surgery.
