Nandini Shrikent Hails Vijay Varma As Casting Gold: ‘He Hit It Out of the Park’ In Gully Boy

Vijay Varma’s career surge gains fresh attention as casting director Nandini Shrikent calls attention to the performance that changed everything. Shrikent looked back on Varma’s role in Gully Boy, where Varma played Moeen Bhai in the 2019 film, and described how that audition convinced everyone in the room.

While that performance still draws praise, Varma’s upcoming work keeps the momentum steady. The actor leads Nagraj Manjule’s period drama Matka King, set in Mumbai’s gambling underworld. Varma also joins Hansal Mehta’s crime drama Family Business opposite Anil Kapoor, appears in Lust Stories 3, and, as reported, headlines an action thriller with Sunny Deol.

Vijay Varma casting journey and Gully Boy breakthrough

Shrikent explained that Varma’s impact in Gully Boy did not end with the audition. The portrayal of Moeen Bhai revealed the intense style that later powered roles in Darlings, Dahaad and Jaane Jaan. Gully Boy, however, served as the performance that placed Varma firmly in the mainstream spotlight.

She recalled the selection process in detail and said, “In Gully Boy, we had to audition for this role and I called in good actors because it was a good film, good director, good role… and one of them hit it out of the park and then hit it out of the park in the movie. His name is Vijay Varma.”

Shrikent then referred to Varma’s training and first feature, noting the early recognition. She said, “Vijay’s first film (Shor) went to Cannes and he’s from FTII and he’d already done a few films that were interesting.” That background, Shrikent suggested, prepared Varma for a demanding mainstream part.

Reflecting on how everything aligned, Shrikent added, “He happened at the right place, right time, right script, right character, right director, right film. Everything just worked.” For Shrikent, that combination turned a strong performer into a widely noticed presence across film and streaming projects.
