It took until Day 9 of the Milan Cortina Games but Canada has its first gold medal of these Winter Olympics.
Mikaël Kingsbury, Canada’s flagbearer at the opening ceremony and the most accomplished moguls skier of all time, won Olympic gold in the inaugural men’s dual moguls competition in Livigno on Sunday.
In likely his last Olympics, Kingsbury, 33, captures his second career Olympic gold medal, eight years after his first in PyeongChang. It is also Kingsbury’s second medal of these Games after winning silver in the men’s individual moguls, an event where the gold was decided in tiebreak between Kingsbury and Australia’s Cooper Woods.
Kingsbury beat Japan’s Ikuma Horishima in the final ski off. Horishima finished first but he had too much speed going into the final jump. Kingsbury had tremendous control with his 1080 and his rotations, resulting in a score of 30 over Horishima’s 5.
