Lane Kiffin confronted a reporter who referred to him as a “ho” on a podcast earlier this week.
“When you call someone a ho, that’s a different level,” Kiffin said. “That’s about as bush league as stealing Trinidad’s jersey like Mississippi State did last night.”
The Ole Miss coach crossed paths with Ben Garrett of On3 as he walked off the field following the Rebels’ 38-19 win over Mississippi State in their in-state rivalry game, dubbed The Egg Bowl. Kiffin’s comment referenced his accusation that Mississippi State fans broke into the Ole Miss locker room and stole quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’s jersey ahead of last year’s Egg Bowl.
The two had a conversation on video as Kiffin came off the field. The two briefly spoke after Kiffin approached Garrett. Kiffin walked away, then returned to Garrett and pointed toward the postgame news conference.
“You wanna walk in here and call me a ho? Well, see how it goes,” he said.
Garrett, who has covered Ole Miss since 2008, said earlier this week on a podcast, “You can’t turn a ho into a housewife. Hos don’t act right.”
The line has been used in multiple rap songs, including by Dr. Dre and Ludacris, among others.
Kiffin addressed the confrontation when asked about it after the game.
Garrett interjected after Kiffin finished his response, saying his statement wasn’t calling Kiffin a name but rather referring to his lack of commitment and how that has upset people around Ole Miss.
Kiffin has been juggling the possibility of leaving Ole Miss for LSU or Ole Miss for weeks. Earlier this month, his family visited Baton Rouge, La., and Gainesville, Fla, as the two schools courted Kiffin’s services.
The Athletic reported on Saturday that Kiffin is unlikely to choose Florida, and the Gators are focused on other candidates for their opening.
Ole Miss announced earlier this month that Kiffin would announce his plans following the rivalry game. Kiffin told ESPN after the game that he still hadn’t decided his future.
“No, I haven’t,” he said. “I got a lot of praying to do to figure that out tomorrow.”
