Kansas State will part ways with head coach Jerome Tang, university sources confirmed to The Athletic. His buyout is $18.7 million before April 30.
The Athletic was told by a school source this past week that athletic director Gene Taylor had told Tang this year that he would get another season. However, that did not hold true.
Tang posted a 71-57 record in four seasons and a 29-39 Big 12 record.
After reaching the Elite Eight in his first season, the Wildcats have not returned to the NCAA Tournament and haven’t posted a winning record in conference play. Tang recently made headlines after criticizing his team postgame following a 91-62 loss to Cincinnati at home.
“These dudes do not deserve to wear this uniform. There will be very few of them in it next year. I’m embarrassed for the university, and I’m embarrassed for our fans, our student section. It is just ridiculous. We’ve got practice at 6 a.m. tomorrow morning, and we will get this thing right. I have no answer and no words,” Tang said.
Against No. 3 Houston on Saturday, Kansas players did not have their last names on the back of their jerseys.
This story will be updated. More to come.
