June Squibb is still besties with ‘Glee’ star Chris Colfer, 61 years her junior

Age is nothing but a number when it comes to true friendship — just ask Chris Colfer and June Squibb.

On the new episode of Amy Poehler‘s podcast, Good Hang, the host asked Squibb, 96, about her lasting friendship with Colfer, 35, which began when the two appeared on Glee together in 2014. “Yes, we are heavy-duty buddies,” Squibb confirmed to Poehler, her Inside Out 2 costar.

When asked what was so special about Colfer, Squibb explained, “Well, I met him on Glee and he had written the script and was doing the lead and it was Peter Pan and I was playing Wendy. It’s a whole story.”

The episode in question, “Old Dog, New Tricks,” aired during the fifth season of the Fox musical series. In it, Colfer’s character, Kurt, feels unappreciated by his friends and finds renewed purpose when he helps an older woman, Maggie (Squibb), who lives in a retirement home, put on a production of Peter Pan.

“We worked together so closely,” Squibb continued. “It was big scenes, and I think we shot like a week and a half or two weeks — it was a long shoot, and I just sort of got to know him and liked him a lot.”

After the shoot, Squibb said they “started then having dinner together” and she got to know his partner, Will Sherrod, of whom the actress said, “I adore, too. It was just great fun.”

Poehler asked what she learns from Colfer and other friends who are younger than she is, or if they come to her for life advice. “If I like someone, I don’t think I ever think in terms of how old they are,” Squibb said. “If I feel an affinity, that there’s something here that I want to be more a part of… I mean, why would I tell anyone what to do?”

She also joked that she is not the person young people should be seeking out for advice. “No. They know they’re not going to get it. So, they don’t ask,” she said of her younger friends.

Colfer and Squibb have not been shy about their friendship over the years. Just last year, Colfer shared a sweet post in support of Squibb’s new film at the time, Thelma. “I just got back from @sundanceorg where we celebrated my dear friend June Squibb and her incredible new movie #Thelma,” Colfer wrote in a post on his Instagram, alongside a cute photo of him posing with Squibb. “I can’t wait for you all to see it! It is the most charming, heartwarming, and hilarious action comedy ever. And at 94, June is doing flips, stunt driving, and shooting guns! Keep an eye out for it!”
