Jayson Tatum will be assigned to the G League Monday so he can participate in parts of the Maine Celtics’ practice, according to the NBA’s Boston Celtics.
The latter announced they plan to immediately recall Tatum after the G League practice, which will take place at the Auerbach Center. Hugo González and Amari Williams will also compete in the practice, according to the team.
Though the Celtics did not reveal which parts of practice Tatum will complete, the G League assignment marks another big step in his recovery from a torn Achilles, which has sidelined him all season. He recently started doing 5-on-5 work with the Celtics coaching staff.
Celtics general manager Brad Stevens said Friday Tatum still has “a ways to go” in his rehabilitation process, but has “hit a lot of the thresholds” he needs to reach before a potential return. Stevens said the Celtics want Tatum to come back whenever he is fully ready.
“The best (time) for Jayson Tatum to come back is when he’s 110% healthy, he’s fully cleared by everybody that matters in that decision, and he’s got great piece of mind, and he’s ready to do it,” Stevens said. “That’s it. That’s the objective, and that’s what we’re going to stick with.”
