It’s still a ‘low fire’ jobs market. Jobless claims stay low and unemployment falls early in the new year.

unemployment rate fell in January for a second straight month, but it shouldn’t have come as a big surprise. The number of people who applied for jobless benefits last month also sank to a two-year low last — and there’s no sign layoffs are about to surge.

Initial jobless claims declined by 5,000 to 227,000 in the seven days ended Feb. 7, the government said, nudging them back down toward recent lows.
