Mikaela Shiffrin arrives at the 2026 Winter Olympics as her sport’s decade-long statistical outlier and standard-bearer. The Colorado native, now 30, is the winningest World Cup Alpine skier in history with 108 career victories, and she heads to Milan Cortina as the clear gold-medal favorite in slalom.

She collected win No. 108 with a dominant women’s slalom victory in Špindlerův Mlýn, Czech Republic, on Jan. 25, clinching her record ninth slalom crystal globe the most ever in that discipline.

Shiffrin’s story at the Winter Games is less linear. She is a two-time Olympic champion, with slalom gold in 2014 and giant slalom gold in 2018, yet she left 2022 Games without a medal after six starts. She recorded DNFs in giant slalom, slalom and combined, then finished ninth in super-G and 18th in downhill, with her best result a fourth-place finish in the team event.

She enters Cortina d’Ampezzo having rebuilt giant slalom confidence after a November 2024 crash required abdominal surgery. This time, her plan is more condensed, down to three events: slalom, giant slalom and the women’s team combined. In giant slalom this season, she has been steadily in the mix, including a recent third-place finish at Špindlerův Mlýn, her first GS podium in two years.

In the team combined, Shiffrin will pair up with Breezy Johnson, who won her first gold medal Sunday in the women’s downhill. The duo took home gold at the 2025 world championships.
