Just 25 years old, Chloe Kim is already one of the most accomplished athletes in Winter Olympics history. She’s the first woman to win two gold medals in snowboarding halfpipe, standing atop the podium at Pyeongchang 2018 and Beijing 2022. Kim now tries to pull off the first-ever three-peat, even after tearing her labrum in training for Milan Cortina.
A bright floodlight has been cast upon Kim. She’s one of Team USA’s foremost stars, and she embodies her sport’s evolution for a worldwide audience. Here’s how to watch her go for halfpipe heroics this week.

In competition, Kim shreds with a glowing confidence. She’s been a snowboarding mainstay since her prodigious X Games superpipe title at age 14. The California-based Kim then landed back-to-back 1080 spins and a perfect score at the U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix. Olympic gold came in 2018 and 2022, and she recorded an unprecedented 1260 in 2024.
Kim is steeped in stardom. As a teenager, she adorned covers of both Sports Illustrated and Corn Flakes — boxes of the latter sold out in seven hours. Her post about an unfinished breakfast sandwich almost broke the internet from Pyeongchang. She’s among the most recognizable faces in these Winter Games. But her journey hasn’t been without a few hitches.
The Olympian took a 22-month break from snowboarding, which New York Times reporter John Branch called “unheard-of voluntary detox for a top athlete just reaching her prime.” She disclosed her struggles with depression, and revealed that she once threw a gold medal into her parents’ trash bin. After a sabbatical, self-reflection and commitment to therapy, Kim looks ready to pursue a historic third straight Olympic gold — something that no snowboarder has ever done in the same event.
“It’s been a really beautiful journey to learn more about myself and kinda discover who I am as a 25-year-old now, proud owner of a frontal lobe,” Kim said in Milan Cortina.
Kim’s status for the 2026 Games appeared compromised when she injured her shoulder last month. The tissue tear was the “less severe” kind, she wrote in a Jan. 13 Instagram post. However, she admitted that she won’t have the ideal number of reps to prepare for the Olympics. She will also wear a shoulder brace during the halfpipe.
Given the circumstances, a 2026 gold medal would perhaps be the biggest accomplishment of Kim’s decorated career.
