Charlotte Hornets star LaMelo Ball was involved in a two-car crash Wednesday in downtown Charlotte, a league source told The Athletic.
Video from WSOC-TV in Charlotte showed a camouflage-colored, custom-made GMC Hummer driving through an intersection, where it collided with a gray Kia sedan. After the crash, footage showed someone getting out of the Kia and walking toward the Hummer.
The Hummer belongs to Ball, according to the source. The video showed Ball exiting the truck and getting into another vehicle before being driven away.
Ball was not injured in the crash, which happened on Trade and Tryon streets, according to The Charlotte Observer.
The Athletic reached out to sources close to Ball, but they declined to comment.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said it could not confirm who was involved in the crash.
Ball was sued in May 2024 for an incident in which he was driving. That incident occurred less than a mile from Wednesday’s crash scene.
The mother of an 11-year-old boy alleged that the point guard ran over her son’s foot and broke it while leaving Spectrum Center in his car after a fan event in October 2023. The lawsuit, filed by Tamaria McRae in Mecklenburg County Superior Court, claims that her son, Angell Joseph, approached Ball’s car for an autograph before he drove over his foot.
The family sought more than $25,000 in damages from Ball and the Hornets. The case is still in litigation.
The Hornets will play their first game since the All-Star break on Thursday, when they host the Houston Rockets. Ball is averaging 19.3 points and 7.4 assists this season.
