‘Home Improvement’ star Zachery Ty Bryan arrested for allegedly violating probation

Former child star Zachery Ty Bryan is back in jail after being arrested in Lane County, Ore., on a probation violation.

The Home Improvement alum and his girlfriend, Johnnie Faye Cartwright, were both taken into custody and booked on Saturday, according to jail records reviewed by Entertainment Weekly. The actor is currently being held without bail at Lane County Jail and is scheduled to be released on Wednesday, Dec. 3.

While Bryan was taken in for allegedly violating probation from his prior domestic violence conviction, Cartwright is facing five separate charges: one count of driving under the influence, three counts of reckless endangering, and one count of attempted first-degree assault.

It is unclear if either Bryan or Cartwright has representation to comment on their behalf.

The Saturday arrest is the latest in a string of legal issues for Bryan, who has been in and out of jail over the last few years. His most recent run-in with the law was in January, when Bryan was arrested in Myrtle Beach, S.C., and charged with second-degree domestic violence.

Years prior, Bryan was arrested in October 2020 on a felony charge of strangulation and misdemeanor charges of assault and interfering with a police report. He pleaded guilty to two counts the following February: menacing and assault in the fourth degree, constituting domestic violence.

Reflecting on the incident during a 2023 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Bryan claimed that it was blown out of proportion.

“We didn’t even really get that physical,” he told the outlet. “We got really loud. We were screaming, and because we were in a townhome that had [thin walls], everybody could hear…. At the end of the day, [the police] throw a bunch of counts at you because they ultimately want you to plead to something.”

He added, “I could’ve fought it…but that’s more stress and drama. I got two misdemeanors and called it a day.”

A month after the interview was published, Bryan was booked on charges of felony assault, third-degree robbery, and assault. He pleaded guilty to felony assault in the fourth degree later that year, eventually serving seven days in jail and 36 months of supervised probation, according to PEOPLE

He was arrested again the following February on a felony DUI charge and a misdemeanor contempt of court charge. Then, in October, he was arrested on charges of driving under the influence and driving without a valid license. His record also includes past DUI arrests in 2004, 2007, and 2017.

Bryan is best known for playing Tim Allen‘s eldest son on the hit ’90s sitcom Home Improvement. He also made appearances on hit TV shows, including Burn Notice, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Veronica Mars. In 2009, he booked a role on the big screen as a villain in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. Bryan ultimately walked away from acting and has since opened up about his struggles with alcohol abuse and finding work in the aftermath of his childhood success.
