Gary O’Neil has held talks over becoming the new Strasbourg head coach, and a decision is expected later today.

The role looks increasingly likely to be vacant as current head coach Liam Rosenior closes in on replacing Enzo Maresca at Chelsea.

The Athletic reported on January 1 that Rosenior was the leading contender to replace Maresca at Stamford Bridge and reported on January 4 that the 41-year-old had flown to London to continue talks.

Club sources confirmed that if Rosenior is to replace Maresca, he will not be confirmed until Strasbourg have a new head coach, with now former Wolverhampton Wanderers and Bournemouth manager O’Neil in the running.

O’Neil, 42, has held talks with the French club and is said to be one of the finalists for the position. There’s a list of three potential candidates that is being whittled down to two before the expected final decision later today.

O’Neil has been without a club since being sacked by Wolves in December 2024. The English coach had initial talks over returning to the Premier League club in November 2025 to replace Vitor Pereira, but later withdrew from the hiring process as he did not feel the opportunity was right for him at this time.

If he is appointed Strasbourg head coach, it will be the first time he has coached outside of England.

Strasbourg are seventh in Ligue 1 and are next in action against French fourth division side Avranches in the French Cup on Saturday.
