Director Paran Bawa On The Inspiration Behind The Film Jassi Weds Jassi: ‘Comedy Isn’t About…’

“Growing
up
in
a
Punjabi
family,
everyone
had
a
nickname
and
sometimes
very
quirky
ones.
The
idea
struck
me
when
I
once
met
five
people
named
Jassi
in
a
single
day,”
laughs
Bawa.
“That’s
when
I
realized
I
could
build
a
comedy
of
errors
around
it.
Since
‘Jassi’ works
for
both
boys
and
girls,
it
added
a
fun
twist.”

Recreating
the
90s,
he
admits,
was
no
easy
feat.
“There
are
hoardings,
mobile
phones,
and
digital
noise
everywhere
today.
We
wanted
the
film
to
visually
transport
people
to
a
quieter,
simpler
time.
So,
we
found
this
town
in
Ramnagar
in
Uttrakhand,
where
time
has
stood
still.
The
busy
narrow
lanes,
old
homes,
halwais
and
many
colourful
shops,
all
reflect
the
90’s
charm.”

Bawa
credits
costume
designer
Darshan
Jalan
(Filmfare
Award
winner
for
Laapataa
Ladies)
for
recreating
the
era
authentically.
“We
pulled
references
from
old
family
albums

how
our
parents
dressed,
how
their
friends
looked,”
he
adds.

For
him,
the
heart
of
Jassi
Weds
Jassi
lies
in
its
characters.
“Comedy
isn’t
about
punchlines;
it’s
about
life
as
we
live
it.
We
derived
humor
through
everyday
people
from
real
towns,
be
it
a
saree
or
cassette
shop
owner,
or
an
inspector.
The
beauty
of
this
film
is
that
it’s
not
about
one
hero;
but
every
character.”
