Dax Shepard shares why he ‘neglected’ wife Kristen Bell on Valentine’s Day

Dax Shepard was spoiled for choice when it came to choosing a Valentine this year, and those who didn’t get picked were feeling “definitely neglected.”

The Armchair Expert podcast host revealed that he showered his two daughters with wife Kristen Bell — Lincoln, 12, and Delta, 11 — with love for this year’s Feb. 14 holiday, leaving his longtime love feeling the lack in the aftermath.

“My girls are my Valentines, so I went all out,” Shepard shared during the Fact Check segment of Tuesday’s podcast episode. “All I’ll say is that someone had a less-than-exciting Valentine’s Day versus their anticipation.”

He continued: “I know that my daughter loves floaties for the pool. So I got heart-shaped floaties and inflated them and put them in the pool. I made each of them handmade cards where I really drew pictures. And then I wrote, really, you know, how I felt about them. So I put several hours into my Valentines.”

At least Bell wasn’t alone in her disappointment; the comedian added that his mom, Laura Labo, was in town during Valentine’s Day weekend, and he came up short when it came to her gifts as well.

“She’s been my Valentine for 51 years,” he said of his mother. “So just, it really becomes a bandwidth. All my resources went to the little ones, and I definitely neglected my mom and Kristen.”

But Shepard reasoned that the two adult women in his life understood and appreciated that he devoted his attention to his daughters for the holiday.

“I think from Kristen and my mom’s point of view, they saw that I was spending a lot of my energy on my other two Valentines,” he said.

Shepard’s cohost, Monica Padman, pointed out, “For Kristen, that is the Valentine’s gift,” to which he replied, “I hope so.”

Even though Bell may have spent her Valentine’s Day feeling a little neglected, it’s clear she has nothing but love for Shepard’s outlook on life and how he cares for their family. During an appearance on SiriusXM’s Andy Cohen Live in October, the Nobody Wants This actress reflected on why she chose Shepard to be her other half when they began dating in 2007 and again, before they got married in 2013.

“I am glad I chose my husband, because he has a commitment to growth at all times,” Bell said at the time. “I don’t like the idea that you’re like looking for your perfect puzzle piece, because you also have to become a puzzle piece that fits with someone else.”

She continued, “So if you find two people that are like, ‘Yeah, we’re gonna make this work,’ and that means we’re gonna compromise constantly, and those compromises should work well for both of us. And sometimes it’s gonna ebb and sometimes it’s gonna flow, but we’re not gonna have checks and balances because we’re gonna realize it’s not me against you, it’s us against the world.”
