Stockholm-based streaming platform Cultpix is moving into physical media distribution, partnering with national film institutes in Hungary, Taiwan, Czech Republic and Estonia for a new Blu-ray label set to launch at the Cannes Film Festival in May.
The cult and exploitation cinema platform will debut with four restored titles from partner archives: “Meteo” (1990) from National Film Institute Hungary, “Fantasy of the Deer Warrior” (1961) from Taiwan Film & Audiovisual Institute, “The Man from the First Century” (1962) from Národní filmový archiv in Prague, and “Madness” (1968) from Estonian Film Institute.
“Meteo” will be the first release at Cannes, with the remaining titles rolling out on a monthly schedule. The company also plans to release TFAI’s restoration of Taiwan’s “Dragon Superman” trilogy from 1968 later in the year. Cultpix is in discussions with additional rights holders for future releases.
The physical media venture extends Cultpix’s existing relationships with 11 national film institutes and archives that supply content for its streaming service. The move also follows the trajectory of Swedish sister company Klubb Super 8, which has operated its own Blu-ray label for more than 25 years focusing on Swedish cinema. Klubb Super 8 relaunched its label at Cannes in May 2025 with “The Year of Christina Lindberg” and has since released a dozen titles, including Swedish-Japanese co-productions from Toei and Nikkatsu, plus partner label releases with OCN in the U.S.
Beyond home video, Cultpix plans to organize theatrical screenings of titles from its catalog as part of a multi-platform distribution strategy.
“Our expansion into Blu-ray comes from years of understanding exactly which titles connect with global audiences,” said Rickard Gramfors, CEO of Cultpix. “The data insights from our streaming platform, combined with our curatorial partnerships with film institutes and archives around the world, put us in a unique position to identify films that deserve a premium physical release. These aren’t just catalogue titles – they’re genuine discoveries that our audience has told us they want to own.”
The company will present its expanded slate at Berlin’s European Film Market, where executives plan to secure additional content for both digital and physical distribution channels. Additional release announcements are scheduled for later this year.
