Cinemex, the Mexican film distribution-exhibition giant, has set a second-quarter release date for “Abracadaver,” the final movie from writer-actor-director Pancho Rodríguez (“Looking for an Angel”), who died Nov. 13.
Already a Walt Disney Co. pickup for North America with Hulu controlling U.S. streaming rights, “Abracadaver” has also been acquired by Vic Films Corp. for Central America and the Caribbean. In other dealing, Movistar+ has taken Spanish pay TV/SVOD and Spafax inflight rights. Latin America’s pay-one window is under discussions, as are other European and Asian territories, said FilmSharks Guido Rud, who produced and is now selling the film.
“Abracadaver” turns on three circus magician brothers who reunite to steal a twin mummy valued at millions of dollars from an impenetrable fortress.
Boasting a Mexican star cast, led by Alberto Estrella (“Man on Fire”), Denisse Corona (“Centauro del norte”) and Pablo Abitia (“Pancho Villa”), “Abracadaver” was shot in Rodríguez’s home state of Jalisco with the aid of the local government tax rebate, Filma Jalisco.
“Looking for an Angel” won an Audience Award at Guadalajara. Co-written by Rodríguez, animated feature “The Big Wish” (“Día de muertos”) scored a Mexico Academy Ariel Award nomination in 2020.
