Production assistants on NBC’s Chicago Med have decided to unionize.
Crew members on the long-running medical drama voted 11-1 to join Production Assistants United in a National Labor Relations Board election on Wednesday. The eligibility of five ballots were challenged and will be determined at a later date.
“We’re not saying ‘fuck the studios,’ we just want a seat at the table too,” Chicago Med production assistant Evelyn-Mariah Johnson said in a statement.
Added one anonymous organizer of the campaign, “PAs are the only assistants in Hollywood that are on the ground making the movies and shows we all love. They deserve a seat at the table to collectively bargain. Studios investing in a PA union will better safeguard the next generation of talent for this industry.”
The Hollywood Reporter has reached out to Universal Television and Wolf Entertainment, which produce the program, for comment.
The move follows the unionization of production assistants with the same labor group on Chicago Fire in December. Chicago Fire was the first show in Chicago to be unionized by Production Assistants United, which is affiliated with the L.A.-based laborers’ union LiUNA Local 724.
Production Assistants United won its first union at The Pitt in September 2025. Ever since, the group has unionized shows including The Four Seasons, Abbott Elementary, All American and George & Mandy’s First Marriage.
Created by procedural mega-producer Dick Wolf, Chicago Med follows the medical personnel populating a bustling emergency room in a fictional Chicago hospital. S. Epatha Merkerson, Torrey DeVitto, Nick Gehlfuss and Yaya DaCosta star in the series, which has so far aired 11 seasons.
