Carrick gets huge derby day win

Michael Carrick enjoyed a dream return to the dugout as Manchester United shocked rivals Manchester City to earn a thoroughly deserved win at Old Trafford.

United were full of energy, life and goal threat throughout and second-half goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu delivered the points.

City were insipid and rarely looked like scoring as they stay six points behind Arsenal at the top of the Premier League.

United, on the other hand, climb into fourth ahead of Saturday’s later games.

In a much-improved first 45 minutes for United, Carrick saw the recalled Harry Maguire head against the crossbar.

His side were on the front foot, pressed high and had the ball in the net twice, although Amad and Bruno Fernandes were offside on each occasion.

City rarely looked like cutting through and were caught on a counter attack which Mbeumo clinically finished past the outstanding Gianluigi Donnarumma.

And when substitute Matheus Cunha picked out Dorgu to slam in a second the points were sealed at a raucous Old Trafford.

There was still time for substitute Mason Mount to score with his first touch after more great wing play from Cunha – but that was ruled out for offside.

More to follow.
