Brewers, manager Pat Murphy in agreement on 3-year contract: Source

The National League’s reigning back-to-back manager of the year is staying in Milwaukee, at least through 2028. The Brewers have inked their skipper, Pat Murphy, to a three-year contract that includes a club option for 2029, a league source told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal on Thursday.

Murphy’s deal is a new contract that reworks the final year of his previous deal while also adding two more years. In all, it will cover the 2026 through 2028 seasons.

Murphy, who was hired in 2023 to replace Craig Counsell, had spent the previous eight seasons as Counsell’s bench coach. When Counsell left to manage the Chicago Cubs, Milwaukee elevated Murphy to the position.

Operating under stricter financial guidelines, Murphy has guided the Brewers to the postseason in each of the last two seasons, stretching Milwaukee’s dominance of the NL Central crown to three straight seasons.

Last season, the Brewers’ 97-65 mark was the best in franchise history and the best in baseball. The Brewers reached the National League Championship Series for the first time since 2018, only to be swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers (4-0), who went on to repeat as World Series champions.

Overall, under Murphy, the Brewers have a 190-134 record. In winning the NL’s Manager of the Year award in consecutive seasons, Murphy became the first skipper since Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox (2004 and 2005) to repeat as the winner.
