Two camps who will get their respective Champions League play-off adventures underway on Wednesday night, Club Brugge will welcome Atletico Madrid to the Jan Breydel Stadium.
Starting with the hosts, while Club Brugge might get their play-off charge underway pencilled in as a real underdog contender on Wednesday night, Ivan Leko’s side will be confident of asking some real questions here. Last seen over the weekend clinching a 2-1 victory against bitter local rivals Cercle Brugge, the Belgium heavyweights have won five of their previous six appearances across all competitions. Signing off their Champions League group stage adventure with a sensational 3-0 romp at home against Marseille on January 28th, the former Gent boss should also be excited by his side’s free-scoring performances in the final third. Including a dominant 4-1 victory away at European debutants Kairat Almaty last month, Club Brugge have notched at least a pair of goals in six of their previous seven outings. It should also be highlighted, Leko’s side have won their last three consecutive showdowns in front of their own supporters by an aggregate score of 10-3.
As for the visitors, while Atletico Madrid might have claimed a stunning Copa del Rey scalp on February 12th as they secured a thumping 4-0 victory against Barcelona, Diego Simeone’s men came immediately crashing back down to earth last time out. Putting in a nightmare performance as they slumped to a 3-0 drumming against local foes Rayo Vallecano, the Spanish giants have failed to find any kind of stability since opening the New Year. Signing off their respective Champions League group stage adventure with an infamous 2-1 loss at home against Norwegian outfit Bodo/Glimt, Wednesday’s guests have also shown some extended inconstancies on the road. Despite claiming a remarkable 5-0 Copa del Rey win against Real Betis on February 5th, that is the only victory that Simeone’s side have recorded from their previous five showdowns against top-flight opposition. It should also be noted, Atletico fell to a 2-0 loss when they last travelled to Brugge back in October 2022.
