Billboard Editor Hannah Karp Tapped as Warner Music Comms Head

Longtime Billboard editorial director Hannah Karp has been tapped as EVP and chief communications officer at Warner Music Group, the company announced on Tuesday.

Karp replaces veteran music comms executive James Steven, who left WMG earlier this month for a new role as chief communications officer at Universal Music Group. WMG said Karp would oversee the company’s communications, as well as WMG’s philanthropic efforts and special events. She will report to WMG CEO Robert Kyncl. Her appointment is effective January 26.

“Hannah’s expert insights, sharp instincts, and innovative approach to storytelling make her the ideal leader to help shape and communicate our future-focused vision during a time of rapid and dynamic evolution,” Kyncl said in a statement. “She is widely respected across the business and creative communities, bringing invaluable relationships and a broad perspective shaped by over two decades at the center of the music and media conversation. We’re very happy to welcome her to WMG.”

Karp leaves Billboard following nearly a decade at the publication, first joining from The Wall Street Journal in 2017 as news director before being promoted to editorial director the next year. With Karp’s departure, Billboard announced Tuesday that editors Leila Cobo and Jason Lipshutz have been named co Chief Content Officers at the publication, with both reporting directly to Billboard CEO Mike Van.

“We are thrilled to recognize such extraordinary leaders within our organization,” Van said of Cabo and Lipshutz’s promotions. “What Leila has been able to create over the years through her commitment to excellence, deep relationships and passion for music is unprecedented. Additionally, watching Jason grow with Billboard over the years into such a respected and committed leader of the organization is incredible.”

Billboard is owned by Penske Media Corporation, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter.
