The Chicago Bears have landed on a new offensive coordinator for head coach Ben Johnson, set to promote Press Taylor to fill an important role on the staff, The Athletic has confirmed. Taylor, 38, spent last season as the Bears’ passing game coordinator and was a key cog in what Johnson referred to as “a five-star staff.” NFL Network was the first to report Taylor’s promotion.
The Bears have now filled the OC role after Declan Doyle departed to become the new play-calling coordinator for the Baltimore Ravens under new coach Jesse Minter. Doyle had received significant praise from Johnson for his intelligence, organizational skills and communication style.
Upon taking the Bears’ head coaching job in 2025 and vowing to remain the offensive play caller, Johnson described the coordinator duties as a table-setting role, vowing his intent to find someone who was “extremely detail-oriented, organized and structured” while also emphasizing the need to be “willing to work late nights.” It’s presumed that same job description still applies.
Taylor’s NFL coaching start came in 2013 in Philadelphia as an offensive quality control assistant under Chip Kelly. While with the Eagles, Taylor also coached under Doug Pederson for five seasons as the assistant quarterbacks coach, quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator.
Taylor was with the Indianapolis Colts as a senior offensive assistant under Frank Reich in 2021 and then spent three more seasons as Pederson’s offensive coordinator in Jacksonville.
The Bears experienced a significant offensive leap in 2025 as Johnson united with quarterback Caleb Williams and the team made significant upgrades to its offensive line. The Bears went from last in the league in total offense in 2024 to sixth last season. They also improved in scoring from 28th to ninth, upping their per-game point average from 18.2 to 25.9. The team led the NFC with 144.5 rushing yards per game.
Taylor was a part of that success and will now get promoted to a new role under Johnson. The Bears are also adding Eric Studesville to their staff to replace departed running backs coach Eric Bieniemy. It remains to be seen how Johnson will handle the passing game coordinator role that Taylor occupied last season.
