Bayern Munich winger Luis Diaz has been handed a three-match ban for his red card against Paris Saint-Germain, which will rule him out of the matches against Arsenal, Sporting CP and Royale Union Saint-Gilloise.

Diaz scored twice in Bayern’s 2-1 win over holders PSG on November 4 but was dismissed for a challenge on Achraf Hakimi shortly before the interval. Hakimi was forced off with ankle ligament damage and has not played since.

UEFA, the European governing body, deemed Diaz’s challenge “serious rough play” in its latest round of disciplinary rulings, and has banned the former Liverpool forward for three Champions League games – meaning he cannot feature again in the competition until Bayern’s visit to PSV Eindhoven in their final league phase match on January 28 next year.

Diaz, 28, will miss the trip to Arsenal on November 26, as well as home matches against Sporting and USG on December 9 and January 21, respectively.

Earlier on Friday, Bayern manager Vincent Kompany said he expected Diaz to miss one game and that he would be “disappointed” with a longer ban.

Bayern are top of the Champions League initial phase, with four straight wins, ahead of Arsenal and Inter Milan on goal difference.

As well as his double against PSG, Diaz also scored in the 4-0 home win over Club Brugge in the competition, and has six goals and four assists in 10 Bundesliga appearances since joining Bayern from Liverpool in the summer.
