Atletico Madrid have received a €30,000 fine and a ticket ban after the club’s fans were found to have made monkey gestures and noises, as well as Nazi salutes during a game against Arsenal in October.
The Spanish side lost 4-0 at the Emirates Stadium last month in the Champions League. On Thursday, UEFA announced that Atleti will be fined and have a suspended ban placed on their away ticket allocations.
The decision — made by the governing body’s control, ethics, and disciplinary body — for “racist and/or discriminatory behaviour” means that Atletico risk not having supporters at a future UEFA competition match if a similar offence occurs in the probationary period of a year from November 27.
An additional fine of €10,000 was issued to the La Liga club for the throwing of objects.
The lead-up to the October match featured additional controversy as the away side complained to Arsenal after experiencing a hot water shortage in the Emirates dressing room after their pre-match training in the rain.
Atletico are 12th in the Champions League, on the same number of points (9) as Newcastle United, Liverpool and Galatasaray after beating Inter Milan with a 93rd minute goal on Wednesday. Their next fixture in the European top-flight competition is against Barcelona away from home on Tuesday.
