Texas quarterback Arch Manning had the most productive performance of his young career Saturday, accounting for a career-high six touchdowns in the No. 17 Longhorns’ 52-37 home rout of Arkansas.
Manning threw for a career-high 389 yards and became the first SEC quarterback to record a passing touchdown, rushing touchdown and receiving touchdown in the same game since Mississippi State’s Dak Prescott in 2014. Manning threw for four touchdowns, ran for one and caught one from receiver Parker Livingstone on a “Philly Special” trick play in the first quarter.

Manning completed his first seven passes and eight of his first nine while leading the Longhorns to three consecutive touchdown drives to open the game. Texas (8-3) scored on seven of its first nine possessions and broke the 50-point threshold for the second time this season and for the first time this year against a Power 4 opponent.
The win keeps the Longhorns in the College Football Playoff discussion, narrowly. They tumbled in the rankings after a 35-10 loss at Georgia last week, but Texas hosts No. 3 Texas A&M (11-0) next week. If the Longhorns were to pull off the upset, it could put them into contention for an at-large bid.
Though the Longhorns benefitted from facing the SEC’s worst defense — Arkansas is last in the conference and in the bottom 30 nationally in multiple statistical categories — it was an encouraging performance for a Texas offense that has been inconsistent this season. Texas’ 490 yards were its second-best offensive output of the season, and it came on just 59 plays. Texas recorded 8.3 yards per play, its second-highest average of the season.
After an up-and-down first half of the season, Manning has steadily improved. Saturday marked the third time in four games that Manning threw for over 300 yards and at least three touchdowns. He has also been more accurate of late, recording his three lowest off-target percentages in the three games preceding Arkansas, according to Pro Football Focus.

The loss kept Arkansas (2-9, 0-7 SEC) winless in conference play. The Razorbacks have lost nine straight after starting the season 2-0. The school fired coach Sam Pittman after a 56-13 loss to Notre Dame dropped the Hogs to 2-3, and offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino has served as interim coach since.
Arkansas has been one of the most explosive offensive teams in the country — it outgained Texas 512-490 Saturday — but mistakes and poor defense have plagued it. In addition to Texas’ seven offensive touchdowns, the Longhorns got one on defense via a 52-yard fumble return by linebacker Liona Lefau.
The Longhorns host the Aggies at 7:30 p.m. ET on Friday. Texas A&M can clinch a berth in the SEC championship game with a victory.
