Apollo Speciality Hospitals removed a 15-cm colon lesion in an 80-year-old woman using a zoom-assisted endoscopic procedure, avoiding open surgery .The patient had been experiencing rectal bleeding and abdominal pain. Tests revealed a large adenoma — a type of polyp that carries a high risk of turning cancerous if left untreated. Given the size and location of the growth, doctors chose Advanced Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD), a specialised procedure that allows removal of complex gastrointestinal lesions without open abdominal surgery.

The six-hour procedure enabled complete removal of the lesion in one piece. The Zoom scope technology used during the surgery provides high magnification and enhanced visual clarity, helping doctors clearly identify tumour margins and carefully remove the growth while preserving the colon.

A histopathological examination later confirmed that the tumour was non-cancerous, preventing possible progression to colorectal cancer.

R. Ravi, clinical lead, Gastroenterology, Liver Disease and Advanced Endoscopy, said the technique helped the patient avoid bowel resection and major surgery.
