Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt‘s son is no longer using both of his parents’ names.
The Mr. and Mrs. Smith costars’ eldest son, Maddox, served as the third assistant director on his mother’s new film, Couture — and in the film’s credits, his name is listed as Maddox Jolie, PEOPLE reports. Maddox, who is the eldest of the ex-couple’s six children together, was previously credited as Maddox Jolie-Pitt in Jolie’s 2024 film Maria, on which he served as a production assistant.
He was also listed as an executive producer on his mother’s 2017 directorial project First They Killed My Father, and had a cameo in his father’s 2013 blockbuster World War Z as a child, though he did not receive an official credit for his work in the film. Maddox also worked as a trainee on the crew of By the Sea, the 2015 drama that his mother directed and both of his parents starred in.

A representative for Pitt declined to comment on the news. Representatives for Angelina Jolie did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly‘s request for comment. EW has also reached out to the producers of Couture for comment.
Couture stars Jolie as a filmmaker who discovers she has breast cancer amid the chaos of Paris Fashion Week. Directed by Alice Winocour, the film also stars Louis Garrel, Anyier Anei, and Ella Rumpf.
Maddox, 24, is not the first of the ex-couple’s six children to drop Pitt’s last name. His 19-year-old sister, Shiloh, filed to remove her father’s name from her own when she turned 18 in 2024. Shiloh’s lawyer said that his client “made an independent and significant decision following painful events” to change her name.
That same year, the ex-couple’s youngest child, Vivienne, who is now 17, was credited as Vivienne Pitt in the Playbill for the Broadway musical The Outsiders, which she helped produce with her mother.
Additionally, in 2023, Zahara, who is now 21, introduced herself as Zahara Marley Jolie (without Pitt as part of her name) as she joined Spelman College’s Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in a video shared by Essence.

Jolie and Pitt began their romance in 2005 after connecting on the set of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. They married in 2014, but Jolie filed for divorce two years later, after an alleged 2016 incident in which she claimed that Pitt was physically abusive toward her and their children on a private plane.
Though the FBI investigated the incident, the bureau later announced that it dropped the investigation in a 2022 report that was reviewed by EW. No charges were filed against Pitt. Additionally, the Associated Press reported that a 2016 child services investigation did not determine abuse.

The two actors finalized their divorce in a settlement in late 2024. “This is just one part of a long ongoing process that started eight years ago,” Jolie’s lawyer, James Simon, told EW at the time. “Frankly, Angelina is exhausted, but she is relieved this one part is over.”
GQ later asked Pitt if he felt relieved by the divorce’s finalization. “No, I don’t think it was that major of a thing,” Pitt told the outlet. “Just something coming to fruition. Legally.”
