Prime Video’s long-gestating God of War series has found its lead actor.
Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy, The Walking Dead) will star in the series based on the hugely popular PlayStation video game franchise. He’ll play Kratos, a Spartan warrior who traded his soul to Ares in exchange for victory in battle. Kratos has been the main character in a franchise that spans 10 video games.
Hurst has a prior connection to the franchise, having voiced Thor in God of War: Ragnarok.
Prime Video ordered God of War to series back in December 2022. The show’s original creative team — Rafe Judkins (The Wheel of Time) and The Expanse co-creators Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby — departed in October 2024 when producers Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios decided on a different creative direction. (
Ronald D. Moore (Outlander, Battlestar Galactica) joined the series shortly after that and is serving as showrunner. The series has a two-season order, and casting and preproduction are underway. Frederick E.O. Toye will direct the first two episodes.
The series will follow the storyline of the two most recent God of War games, which introduced Kratos’ 10-year-old son, Atreus. The two will “embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye,” the show’s logline reads. “Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.”
Moore, who has an overall deal at Sony, executive produces with Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis are co-EPs. Sony and Amazon MGM are producing God of War with PlayStation Productions and Moore’s Tall Ship Productions.
Hurst is coming off The Abandons, Netflix’s western series from Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, and has a role in Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming adaptation of The Odyssey. His credits also include SWAT, The Mysterious Benedict Society and Bosch. He is repped by UTA and Piper Kaniecki Marks Management.
