Adam Sandler debunks viral story about him and daughter Sadie

Adam Sandler would like to clear something up before the internet runs with it any further: The viral TikTok about him and his daughter Sadie is “100 percent insane and made-up.”

The Jay Kelly star — who shares daughters Sadie, 19, and Sunny, 17, with wife Jackie — shed light on the spreading misinformation during a chat with PEOPLE at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Thursday. “By the way, there’s something on the internet talking about that dumb thing,” Sandler said. “I’ve been hearing about this thing and I saw it, and it’s just insane.”

The viral TikTok video was posted to the platform Tuesday, and purportedly shows Sandler telling a story about a retail store employee in Beverly Hills admonishing Sadie she “wasn’t allowed to touch” certain items in the store. The video has Sandler claim that in response to the employee’s rudeness, he bought $312,000 worth of bags from the store to teach the employee a lesson.

“It’s just this made-up, weird thing that people ask me about,” Sandler said of the falsified video. “And I’m just like, ‘I’ve never heard of this in my life.’ That story was 100 percent insane and made-up, and not a word of it is true.”

Sandler, 59, made sure to share the correction with other outlets; he told USA Today that a friend of his texted him to ask about the story, which he described as “nonsense.”

“That was one of the weirdest, dumbest, 100% made up things. It was very odd,” Sandler added. “I don’t know how that [expletive] happens.”

On the other hand, Sandler admitted that a New York Post report saying he ordered “a bunch of Double-Doubles” at midnight at In-N-Out Burger was indeed accurate. “I have to say, that story is true,” he laughingly told PEOPLE. “So that one’s true. The other one’s pathetic.”

Later that night, Sandler received the film festival’s Maltin Modern Master Award, which organizers say is meant to “honor an individual who has enriched our culture through accomplishments in the motion picture industry.”

The actor gave a shout-out to “the love of my life” during his acceptance speech, per PEOPLE. “Thank you for keeping me going all these years. I love you forever. I couldn’t do it without you,” he said, adding, “To my daughters, Sadie and Sunny, you guys are my world. I love you two like you’ll never know.”
