Directed by Baz Luhrmann, EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert presents a bold visual and musical concept built around Elvis Presley’s live performances. EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert restoration work and rare archive discovery

The origins of EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert go back to production on Elvis, released in 2022. During that film, the creative team searched for missing footage from the 1970s concert documentaries Elvis: That’s the Way It Is and Elvis on Tour. The aim was to locate material that might support the biographical film, but the research soon uncovered something larger.

Archivists eventually located sixty-nine boxes containing fifty-nine hours of previously unseen film negatives, linked to those classic tours. Alongside this, never-before-seen Super 8 reels from the Graceland Archives were found by Angie Marchese, VP of Archives and Exhibits and Curator at Graceland. Much of this footage had never been publicly available, with only low-quality bootlegs hinting at its existence.

EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert sound and visual upgrade

Specialists then spent more than two years restoring the material for EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert. The footage now exists with cleaner images and upgraded audio, designed for large-format exhibition. Sound experts drew on rare audio sources to rebuild the performances, allowing audiences to hear Elvis Presley’s voice and band with a clarity not previously accessible.

This restoration work supports Luhrmann’s idea of presenting Elvis Presley’s life as a kind of musical vision. “What if Elvis came to you in a dreamscape, almost like a cinematic poem, and sang to you and told you his story in a way in which you haven’t experienced before?” notes Luhrmann. “Throughout this incredibly detailed process, one of the great finds has been unheard recordings of Elvis talking about his life and his music: from the 1970 Vegas show, on tour in 1972 and even precious moments of the 1957 “gold jacket” performance in Hawaii. I knew that we could not pass up this opportunity. It was these discoveries that gave the inspiration for the new film.”
