50 Cent’s docuseries on Sean Combs abuse allegations gets release date

Over a year after Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson announced that he would produce a Netflix documentary series about the sex trafficking and racketeering allegations against Sean “Diddy” Combs, the project has an official title and release date.

Sean Combs: The Reckoning will premiere on Dec. 2, just two months after the disgraced music mogul was sentenced to 50 months, or just over four years, in prison for two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Combs is expected to be released in May 2028.

Per the docuseries’ official synopsis, the four-part documentary executive produced by Jackson and directed by Emmy winner Alexandria Stapleton is a “staggering examination” of the allegations lobbied against Combs and his eventual conviction.

“Born with an insatiable drive for stardom and a knack for spotting talent, Combs made a quick ascent through the ranks of the music industry with Bad Boy Entertainment and was crucial in bringing hip-hop to the pop masses and launching the careers of dozens of generation-defining artists like The Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, Jodeci and Danity Kane,” the synopsis reads. “But along the way, and as detailed by his former associates, childhood friends, artists and employees, something darker began to color his ambitions.”

The limited series will feature “explosive, never-before-seen materials,” including interviews with those who claim to have formerly been in Combs’ orbit.

“This documentary tells the story of a powerful, enterprising man and the gilded empire he built — and the underworld that lay just beneath its surface,” the show’s description adds.

“Being a woman in the industry, and going through the #MeToo movement — watching giants in music and film go on trial, and to know what their outcomes were… When Cassie dropped her lawsuit, I just thought this could go a million different directions,” Stapleton told TUDUM. “I wondered how she had the confidence to go out there against a mogul like Sean Combs. As a filmmaker, I instantly knew it was a stress test of whether we’ve changed as a culture, as far as being able to process allegations like this in a fair way.”

Jackson added, “I’ve been committed to real storytelling for years through G-Unit Film & Television. I’m grateful to everyone who came forward and trusted us with their stories, and proud to have Alexandria Stapleton as the director on the project to bring this important story to the screen.”

A teaser for the series was also dropped along with the release date. In the brief clip, Jackson’s voice can be heard saying, “You can’t continue to keep hurting people and nothing ever happens. It’s just a matter of time.”

Jackson and Combs have long been rivals, and the rapper-turned-businessman made headlines with his taunts at Combs on social media throughout his criminal trial.

While Combs had been in legal trouble before, things took a turn for the official in 2023, when his former partner, the musician Cassie Ventura, accused him of rape and physical abuse in a damning lawsuit. Though Combs and Ventura settled the suit later that year, more allegations from new accusers began to pour in, leading to Combs’ arrest after a grand jury indictment in 2024.

Combs was ultimately convicted on the prostitution-related offenses, but acquitted of the more serious charges of racketeering and sex trafficking.

Because Jackson has had a decades-long beef with Combs, it was no surprise when he announced his intent to produce the Netflix docuseries shedding more light on the allegations against Combs.

“While the allegations are disturbing, we urge all to remember that Sean Combs’ story is not the full story of hip-hop and its culture,” the Power franchise creator wrote in a joint statement with Stapleton in September 2024. “We aim to ensure that individual actions do not overshadow the culture’s broader contributions.”

Sean Combs: The Reckoning will premiere on Netflix Dec. 2.
