San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Keion White was shot in the ankle during an early-morning Super Bowl event in San Francisco on Monday, according to San Francisco Police.
Spokesman Evan Sernoffsky said White was shot at 4:06 a.m. on the 17th block of Mission Street.
Sernoffsky said there was an altercation between two groups at the event, but that White was not involved in the altercation. After the shooting, he was taken by police to a nearby hospital. He had surgery on the ankle Monday afternoon and is expected to be OK.
The 49ers issued a statement around 4:30 p.m.
“Keion White was a victim of a shooting and sustained a bullet wound to his ankle this morning in San Francisco,” it said. “He is currently undergoing surgery at a local hospital. We will provide further updates when appropriate.”
Sernoffsky said there were no other victims and that no arrests have been made. He said he didn’t know whether the event was related to the Super Bowl, which was held in Santa Clara hours earlier and featured White’s former team, the New England Patriots. White was traded to the 49ers on Oct. 29.
