Thanksgiving can be delightful or draining, a festive feast or a dispiriting dirge.
Binging the best Thanksgiving episodes in a post-meal stupor is one way to cope with a less-than-lovely holiday. Another is drifting off into a comfort food-induced dreamland to imagine what it might be like to share a drumstick with the cast of your favorite TV show.
Pop culture is littered with ensembles for which we’re thankful, from chaotic families like the Bluths of Arrested Development to work families like the teachers of Abbott Elementary.
For when you’re too stuffed to do anything else, here are some of our favorite TV families we recommend spending some time with on Thanksgiving.
The Abbott Elementary teachers

Sure, the teachers at Abbott Elementary all have their own families they may prefer to spend their much-deserved day off with, but picture it: Janine (Quinta Brunson) stressing over making the perfect dinner; Jacob (Chris Perfetti) lecturing us on the problematic history of Thanksgiving, and Barbara (Sheryl Lee Ralph) mispronouncing every other name as they talk pop culture! And we wouldn’t even hazard a guess as to what Principal Ava (Janelle James) would have in store. —Kevin Jacobsen
The Bluths from Arrested Development
20th Century Fox
Talk about dysfunctional families! If you’re brave enough to spend the holidays with this lot, we can’t imagine what your own friends and family members must be like. —Ruth Kinane
The Big Bang Theory nerds
Cliff Lipson/CBS
Hanging with Leonard (Johnny Galecki), Sheldon (Jim Parsons), Raj (Kunal Nayyar), Howard (Simon Helberg), and the rest of this group might be insufferable at times, but you’re guaranteed to learn something about the science behind cooking a turkey to perfection. —R.K.
The Big Little Lies moms
Hilary Bronwyn Gayle/HBO
If the kids aren’t invited and the Sauvignon Blanc is flowing, we don’t imagine a Big Little Lies Thanksgiving celebration could go horribly wrong…or could it? —R.K.
The Johnsons from Black-ish
Adam Taylor/ABC
For the quirkiest of Thanksgivings, there’s no better crew to roll with than Dre (Anthony Anderson), Bow (Tracee Ellis Ross), and the rest of the Johnsons. Be sure to BYO on-point social and political commentary, if you want to keep up. —R.K.
The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Scooby Gang
20th Century Fox
If you don’t mind having your big day plagued by disgruntled and deadly spirits, you’ll be just fine. Maybe keep a stake or two up your sleeve — literally! — and pick the seat next to Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), just to be on the safe side. —R.K.
The Downton Abbey family and their staff
PBS
Problem is…if the staff is sitting down to eat with you, who’s preparing the Thanksgiving feast?
We’re all for Mrs. Patmore (Lesley Nicol) taking a well-earned break, but we don’t think it’s wise leaving the potato dish up to the Ladies of the house. —R.K.
The Friends friends
NBC
Whether they’re playing a “friendly” game of football, getting locked out of the apartment, or stuffing their heads in turkeys, a good time is always guaranteed at Monica (Courteney Cox), Chandler (Matthew Perry), Rachel (Jennifer Aniston), Ross (David Schwimmer), Phoebe (Lisa Kudrow), and Joey’s (Matt LeBlanc) Thanksgiving celebration — just remember to pass on the traditional British “it tastes like feet” trifle. —R.K.
The Starks from Game of Thrones
Helen Sloan/HBO
Well, since it’s Thanksgiving and not a wedding, the death toll won’t be quite as high. But it still won’t hurt you to keep an eye on the North while you eat — all men must dine, after all! —R.K.
The Grey’s Anatomy doctors

Hey, if anyone chokes on turkey, at least you’ll have a doctor on hand! Though, on second thought, judging by the survival rate of the Grey Sloan gang, maybe you’re better off swinging by for dessert. —R.K.
Lorelei and Rory from Gilmore Girls
Mitchell Haddad/CBS Photo Archive via Getty Images
A Gilmore Girls gathering would probably only consist of a huge mug of coffee and takeout, but at least you know the banter would be fast-paced and quippy, and the backdrop quite quaint. —R.K.
The Pritchetts and Dunphys from Modern Family
Colleen Hayes/ABC via Getty Images
They’ll make your modern family look perfectly traditional (and also really unfunny) by comparison. —R.K.
The Parks and Recreation department
Greg Gayne/NBC
Yes, they’ve all scattered to the wind now, but we would gladly treat ourselves to a Thanksgiving dinner/reunion with the Pawnee Parks and Rec Department. We imagine Jerry and his family do the cooking and the others complain no matter how good it is. —K.J.
The Pose chosen family
Eric Liebowitz/FX
There may be fighting at the House of Evangelista, but at least it’ll be entertaining so long as Elektra (Dominique Jackson) is invited. We know they’ll all make up in the end anyway, finding comfort in each other in a world that doesn’t always understand them. And for that, we’re thankful. —K.J.
The teens from Riverdale
Bettina Strauss /The CW
This could be your most exciting Thanksgiving yet with plenty of drama and maybe even a rogue murderer terrorizing the town during the celebrations. You’ll definitely deserve a milkshake at Pop’s by the end of the day. —R.K.
The Roses from Schitt’s Creek
Pop TV
David (Dan Levy) will likely be avoiding another turkey shoot, and lord knows they probably shouldn’t cook the dinner. Still, we would happily join the bickering Rose family for any holiday, even if it’s just at the motel. —K.J.
The Stranger Things kids
Netflix
Expect Will’s (Noah Schnapp) mom Joyce (Winona Ryder) to decorate with her signature string lights, some Dungeons & Dragons play, and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) to bring plenty of Eggos. —R.K.
Sam and Dean from Supernatural
Jack Rowand/The CW
Spending quality time with these two hunky brothers and creatures from unknown realms…what’s not to be thankful for? —R.K.
The Pearsons from This Is Us
Ron Batzdorff/NBC
Much as we would love to be in the warm glow of the past when the Big Three were little and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) was still alive, the present-day Pearsons aren’t so bad themselves. We’ll let them fight over who gets to play Pilgrim Rick. —K.J.
The Will & Grace gang
Chris Haston/NBC
You can definitely count on Will (Eric McCormack) to put out a sophisticated Thanksgiving spread, with Karen (Megan Mullally) bringing buckets of booze, Jack (Sean Hayes) providing plenty of entertainment, and Grace (Debra Messing) adding a dash of classic holiday neurosis. Make sure you come armed with some one-liners! —R.K.
